I joined the Wiki committee in February. Now it´s December and I finally feel like I mostly understand how those parts of the OTW relevant for Wiki work! Yay? Emphasis on the "mostly". I might be over-confident, but there is definitely progress.

We keep discovering things we could have done better, especially in regards with the mediawiki upgrade, and it´s sometimes hard not to get defensive - okay, I get that this wasn´t ideal, but cut us some slack, the whole situation was very chaotic - but in general our users have been nice and very helpful, because they are the best. We´ll do better next time.

Some day soon (ahahaha) I´ll have the time to sit down and figure out how exactly our category system works. I understand the gist of it when I look at the color-coded diagram, but I still get confused when people talk about it.

Only a few days until the OTW term ends officially! Not that Wiki can afford to stop working during the break (please, Santa, can we not have an identity protection request around Christmas/New Year?) I want to do a "look what we did this year, we are great" post, but there´ll also be a lot of "things we planned and didn´t do, we are sorry, here are the reasons why." It doesn´t help that there´s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that we can´t really talk about or that is still unfinished, and that we unfortunately have to finish before it´s sensible to start new projects. But we will, and Fanlore will keep getting better every year.

I can create more category charts. Charts, mmm!

Some parts of the category structure are just plain inconsistent, and some aspects are determined by the specificity of our infobox templates (I think I've made one fandom-specific template so far. I can make more!). Some parts have been revised extensively (Fan Communities), and some parts have been ignored since 2008 (Perspectives on Fans).

I was chatting with an old Star Trek fan (from the print zine era) and she asked me how many name swap requests had come in to Fanlore. And I realized that in the past 4 years it has been only a few compared to how much fan info is up on Fanlore. I think this may be in part because most of what appears on Fanlore has already been posted online, sometimes by the very fans themselves (fanzine publishers I am looking at you!). She added that now that many more of her fellow zine era fans are on Facebook, they're becoming more comfortable with their fannish lives being out there. But as always there will be exceptions and even with such a small percentage (less than 50 requests?) I've been very impressed with how quickly and throughly Fanlore responds.

My long winded way of saying that yes I hope you folks don't have to deal with too many requests over the break.

Part of the delay is that we're having to create fair use guidelines for commentary on the fanart - and that takes time because you are working with different departments. And then there is the fact we're all volunteers with other commitments. And, there are still few regular contributors on Fanlore so were stretched too thin.

I did some basic math - if there are 8000 fanzines on Fanlore and less than 50 name swap requests that is .006%.

And speaking of zines, I will be forwarding feedback from a non-zine fan asking that Fanlore keep an eye on the need to balance one fannish group (zine fans) vs other other fannish groups. Being a zine fan myself, it was a bit of an eye opener.

Support has given up on the idea of a term break. It's not like we can really tell users, "Sorry, Support is on vacation, deal with bugs yourself!"

We need to do some more fun cross-committee meetings. I feel like I never get to talk to non-AO3 related committees anymore!
